Elkton was founded by Andrew Mellon in 1881 as an agricultural and lumber town. It rapidly became a manufacturing center for firearms and ammunition, thanks to its location on the Susquehanna River. The town's industry declined during the Great Depression, but it regained its prominence after World War II when Elkton produced tanks and artillery. The town's fortunes reversed following the 1987 gun control law enacted in response to the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. In 2001, Elkton became one of three Maryland towns to become home to Harford County's first open-carry handgun license. Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Maryland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Elkton were Quakers who arrived in 1781. The town was named for John Elkinton, one of the founders of Prince George's County. In 1859, Congress passed an act to create a county within what was then Prince George's County and name it for General James Biddle Elkhorn because he had been instrumental in its creation. The first courthouse was built on Meetinghouse Road in 1875 and continued as the county seat until 1925 when it moved to nearby Hyattsville. In 1926, Elkton voters approved a $5 million bond issue to build a new high school and football stadium which would become known as "The Big House". Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,867 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and borders Potomac River to the north and east; it is flanked by communities of Bethesda to the south and Gaithersburg to the west. The town was founded in 1792 by Ebenezer Greaves, who named it for his friend, Colonel John Elkinton. The first settlers in what is now Elkton were farmers and their families who arrived from Pennsylvania around 1790. They built log cabins near present-day Elkton Creek before starting a farm that comprised over 60 acres (24 hectares). By 1814, they had moved out of theirLog Cabin Village into larger homes. In 1815, George Washington purchased 7 miles (11 km) of railroad right-of-way that he used to transport goods between Mount Vernon and Annapolis Junction. This opened up business opportunities for entrepreneurs such as Ebenezer Greaves and others who began selling whiskey from wagons along the tracks. In 1819, Congress passed an act authorizing General James K. Polk to build a canal through Maryland which would provide transportation links between Baltimore and Washington D.C.–thus creating new economic opportunities for farmers in both states. The early 20th century was another time when growth occurred in Elkton with businesses like Jardin Rubber Company opening upmarkets across town during this time period. However, progress stalled during World War II when most industry closed down or shifted overseas due to wartime restrictions on trade with America’s allies。 After the war ended in 1945, many local businesses flamed out as technology advanced and new markets emerged such as online shopping malls (). Today, Elmwood Baptist Church remains one of the longest running churches in Maryland with services being given every Sunday morning at 10:00am since December 1st 1903 ().
