Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,731 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Elkton was Nicholas Deering in 1785. He and his family moved from New York to what is now Elkton when he purchased land in present day Elkton from the local Indian tribe for $2 per acre. In 1814, John Hezekiah Holland established a small farm on the site of today's Elkhorn Elementary School (now part of Bowie High School). After several years of growth and development, Holland donated 2 acres (0.8 km²) of his property to the town for use as a public square and schoolhouse. The first municipal building was built on this site in 1827 – it served as both the town hall and until 1830 as the courthouse. On March 1st, 1828, Elkton became an incorporated village with a population of 400 residents under the leadership of two gentlemen named Samuel Paine and Isaac Stevens; these men were instrumental in setting up systems for election administration and other civic functions that remain integral to Elkhorn to this day. In 1881, one mile away from where Elmwood Cemetery now stands (just east of Interstate 95), two brothers by the name of John Hagerty erected a log cabin which they called "Hagerman". This house served as headquarters for much early business activity in Elkton – including post office services (1896), hotel billing (1901), merchants' accounts receivable processing (1913), real estate transactions (1915), insurance claims processing (1920s) – all while located within easy walking distance not only of their home but also their businesses back then! Hagerman quickly became known as "the center" or "heart"of Elkhorn due its central location within town limits as well as its excellent access to resources such as transportation options and commerce overall. In 1904, after many years during which there was no resident doctor or hospital within close proximity for residents to seek medical care when needed;Elkton City Council enacted legislation creating today's Elmwood Hospital with funding provided by Mr. Hagerty himself! As time passed more people began moving into town Limits; eventually resulting in denser populations than existed before given ample room to grow without taking up valuable land elsewhere within townsfolk boundaries - something that continues to be an issue today among Baltimore/Washington commuters seeking access either directly or indirectly onto I-95 southbound from Northern Virginia via Homestead Road/Upper Homestead Road interchange! Despite all this progress over time;elkton still experiences periodic challenges faced by any municipality trying constantly keep pace with technological advancements new businesses are establishing themselves overnight etc.; however through hard work dedication alongside some great partnerships available we can overcome most obstacles!
