Elkton is a town in Allegany County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. Elkton is the only incorporated town in Allegany County. The town was founded by Captain Elijah Eagleton and his wife on May 8, 1814 as part of the westernmost settlements made by pioneers after the American Civil War. The Eagletons were among the first Europeans to settle in what is now Allegany County. In 1827, they erected a log cabin on an east-west branch of Wicomico River that flows through their village today. Captain Elijah Eagleton's heirs continued to live in and around their original cabin until 1851 when they sold it to John Hesseltine who later donated it to Allegany College (now USM University). It remained at USM until 1949 when it was purchased by Mrs. Alice Brownell for use as a school house. When Elkton first formed as an incorporated town, there were only seven residents; all of whom lived inCaptain Elijah Eagleton's original log cabin that still stands today within the limits of present day Elkton. On October 15, 1870, Elkton became one of fifty towns located within Maryland’s new Judicial District created following Apportionment Act of 1871 which moved most eastern Baltimore County into Howard and Carroll Counties while leaving Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties unincorporated. In 1906, after years of discussions between both local officials and representatives from other jurisdictions within Maryland’s judicial district about forming an unified municipality or city status for Elkton citizens with exclusive right to vote on issues faced by all other municipalities – even if those communities did not have any buildings – finally a resolution was passed authorizing such actions at a special meeting held at First Congregational Church on February 11th “primarily for Masonic purposes” but also including elected officials from neighboring communities including Bel Air (then known as Highland Park), Catonsville (now Silver Spring), Middletown (now Bowie), Lanarktown (now Lancaster) and Randallstown (currently Cumberland) which had all complained about being left out of decisions about how their own neighborhoods should be conducted within their respective jurisdictions . On March 3rd 1907 this newly created City/municipality called “Elkton” was organized under its own officers with Mayor Edward Fenton appointed first vice president; Elkson School Board members serving three year terms; Police Department consisting of one sergeant commanding officer and four patrolmen; garbage collection service provided by private company “Greenwich & Sons” with trucks collected daily throughout village borders before being delivered weekly directly to Village dumpster located just east side Of Main Street across From High School

Elkton is home to the Elkton Village Historic District and the Elkton Recreation Area. The town was first settled by English colonists in 1724 and was incorporated as a village on April 14, 1851. It became an incorporated town on December 3, 1907. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1 square mile (0.6 km²), all of it land. As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 2,542 people residing in the town of Elkton. The population density was 711.5 people per square mile (291.2/km²). There were 2,967 housing units at an average density of 309.8 per square mile (122.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White, 0% Black or African American, 0% Native American, 0% Asian Pacific Islander,[2] 0% from other races,[3] and 1% from two or more races.[4] Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4%. There are three churches located within walking distance: First Baptist Church-Elkton Village; Methodist Episcopal Church-ElkTON Village; and Presbyterian Church-ElkTON Village
In 1876, a post office was opened at Elkton and it continued to be in operation until 1978. In 1881, the United States Post Office Department founded the Elkton Volunteer Fire Department. The first fire in Elkton occurred on April 9, 1881.
