Elkton is a small town in central Maryland. The population was 9,379 at the 2010 census. It is part of Prince George's County and is the largest town in that county by land area. In 1861, when Fort McHenry was built on opposite bank of the river as part of an effort to secure Baltimore's eastern border against Confederate attack, much work on fortification started here including construction of a large redoubt which still stands today (complete with artillery pieces). During World War II, many workers from nearby North Yorktown came to help build bunkers around Fort Meade; among them weremany Elktons who worked on constructing ramps leading up to and down from the fortifications. After war ended they returned home but continue to live near Fort Meade until its closing in 1991; since then many have moved away again because property values have increased so much around there.)
