Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Annapolis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1784 by General John Forbes and named for Elk River in Scotland. The first settler in Elkton was James Forbes who arrived on July 10, 1784 from Glasgow, Scotland with his family and three other families. He built a log cabin on the north side of the creek which he named "Fording Creek." He also farmed land around his cabin until 1800 when he sold his land to Captain John Pugh for $2 per acre. Captain Pugh cleared and developed much of what is now Elmira Township including present day Elkton and built several homes hereabouts including "Pugh's Fort" (now known as Historic Park). In 1810 Captain Pugh died leaving his two sons guardian over their father's estate which they managed until 1830 when it passed to another brother Samuel Pugh Jr., son of Samuel Pugh Sr.. In 1830 Samuel Pugh Sr., moved to Fredericktown where he established a tannery which continued operation until 1865. Thereafter, farming became mainstay of the economy with salt production accounting for most of the town's output until well into the 20th century. Today there are few if any businesses left in downtown Elkton aside from one-time grocery store/cafeteria complex that closed in 2000 and been replaced by a small shopping mall that anchors an older shopping district east of Interstate 270 across from Town Hall Plaza. First time home buyer or investor interest rates have been relatively stable at about 6% since 2006 making this an attractive place to live despite limited job prospects throughout much of central Maryland due primarily to retirements among Baby Boomers who were born between 1946 and 1964 years old when middle class jobs had more stability mainline transportation has become available but it remains difficult for many people 65+, particularly those without college degrees beyond high school wages However some young adults have started working downtown after graduating from community colleges or joining local government jobs such as software development or data entry while others are starting their own businesses Elkton has always been close knit with its neighboring towns though social interactions have diminished somewhat during recent decades due largely to increased commuting distances between rural areas within Marylandand Washington D.C.. One exception is Intersectionally located Business District - A business incubation zone spanning 2 blocks south of I-270 near intersection Of Hwy 9 & US 301 that provides access to capital investments and services drawn mainly from outside Montgomery County but also includes investments by local entrepreneurs

In 1819, Elkton became a town under the jurisdiction of Prince George's County. The Elkton Manufacturing Company was founded in 1886 by James Gorman and his brother, John Gorman. The company manufactured farm implements and other items including shoes and saddles. The company grew rapidly thanks to its innovative marketing techniques and its partnerships with other businesses such as Sears Roebuck and J.C Penney. In 1912, James Gorman died suddenly while on vacation in Europe; his son John took over management of the business until he passed away in 1954. In 1916, Elkton residents voted to become racially segregated following passage of a local ordinance that prohibited interracial dating or marriage without written consent from both parties involved. This decision outraged many African Americans who felt violated by their white neighbors' discrimination. Over time, however, some Elkhonians began to accept this social custom as part of their community culture; today it remains an important part of Elmton's history and identity. After World War II, Elkton experienced rapid growth due to successive waves of immigrants from Hungary and Romania; by 1960, it had reached its current population size of over 20 thousand people . Over the years, Elkton has undergone several name changes – most notably becoming known as "Elk City" during the early 21st century – but its core values have remained unchanged: neighborliness and diversity are key drivers behind Elkhonians' unique sense of community spirit."
