Elkton, MD is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. Elkton was founded by Scotsmen in 1785. The town grew rapidly after the American Revolution and became an important shipping and trade center for the region. In 1847, the first gun shop in Elkton opened its doors. By 1870, there were more than 20 gun shops in the town. Elkton was also home to two of the first rifle ranges in America, one located on nearby White Sands National Monument and the other at Fort Myer. After World War II, Elkton experienced rapid growth as a result of its status as a manufacturing center for firearms throughout the United States. Elkton is a small town in King and Queen County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,466 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Prince George's County metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Elkton were French traders in 1604. The first permanent English settlement in what is now Elkton was founded by Captain John Smith in 1692. It was renamed "Newington" after Newington House, where he spent his honeymoon. In 1793, General James Wolfe captured Mount Vernon and moved the British Army into Prince George's County as part of their victory over the American Revolution. In 1814, General Andrew Jackson moved his headquarters from Philadelphia to Mount Vernon during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). He named nearby Mount Vernon "Jackson" in honor of his general officer friend and mentor. After the war ended, many Virginians returned to their homes in Prince George's County and Elkton began to grow slowly but surely as a farming community with large fields of corn, beans, wheat and other crops until World War II when huge amounts of munitions were produced at nearby Middletown Arsenal. After that industry closed down there was little new development for many years until an exciting event occurred on October 5th 1984 when construction began on what would be known as "The Ark", one of America's most innovative shopping malls ever built - it opened its doors to the public on November 4th 1986! Today Elkton is a bustling community with great businesses located all around The Ark including several banks/finance companies/ real estate firms/the latest Apple Store/ Barnes & Noble bookstore...the list goes on!
