Col George Washington fired a cannon ball over his own head at the British forces under Lt.-Col John Montresor outside Fort Necessity (now Arlington National Cemetery). 2nd Lieutenant John Fitzgerald killed two British regulars with one shot from his rifle at Monmouth Gap on December 7th, 1779 – this event is also recognized as the first battle of North America fought with firearms

After becoming a county seat in 1873, Elmira (later Chemung) replaced nearby White Marsh as the town’s primary commercial center beginning around 1915-16 due in part to its location on Route 40 which crossed through central Elkhart Township and connected with Highway 395 near present day Elkton Center before continuing into Montgomery County proper Today much of what once made up Elmira has been demolished or redeveloped into other parts of southeastern Prince George’s County while most remnants remaining still stand within Corporation Park off I-95 just north of downtown Elkhart Township limits where they form a protected natural area known as “The Farms” managed by The Nature Conservancy

Elkton is a town in Howard County, Maryland, United States. The population was 6,521 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the eastern edge of Montgomery County and is bordered by Takoma Park to the north, Bowie to the east, Morningside Heights to the south, and Rockville Centre to the west. It is one of two towns in Howard County that are not part of Washington D.C., and it has no city status. The first settler in what would become Elkton was George Hargrave who arrived in 1787. He built his cabin about three miles northeast of present day Elkton on land that he had purchased from Lord Fairfax. The first school in what would become Elkton was established in 1792 by Reverend John Nicholson with students coming from nearby Takoma Park. In 1824, Reverend James McNaught erected a log schoolhouse which served as a community center for many years until it was destroyed by fire in 1827. In 1834, Elijah White organized a group of farmers who became known as "The Early Eagles". They were successful at marketing their crops and began trading goods with neighboring communities such as Bowie and Morningside Heights. By 1840 they had added an additional store and residences (the first being built on property now occupied by Bowie Elementary School). They petitioned county officials for land to be set aside for farming purposes but were unsuccessful because there was no available space within the then unincorporated area. In 1851 Elijah White again attempted to file petitions for land grant but this time he succeeded and obtained 1,000 acres (400 hectares) nearpresent day Elkton just east of I-95 where he built what would eventually become his home (now known as White House Hill). This new development soon attracted other settlers including General John Poultney who bought 3/4 mile (.50 km) ofland around present day Elkton from Mr White in 1861 for $2 per acre ($30 per hectare). In 1865 Poultney donated another 1/4 mile (.75 km) including part ofcurrentday Elkins Mills Road (now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard) to form modern Elkin Township which later became part ofHoward County. By 1870 there were 553 people living inElkTON with 95% being farmers or traders related to agriculture or trade uring that time period . A post office was established atelkTON on October 14th 1870 under the name "Dalhousie" after Col William Dalhousie , Governor General during Canada's War against Mexico ernest Conrad De Witt Harper - son Of Commodore Nathaniel H Harper - opened up shop here early 1880's selling newspapers door-to-door
