Elkton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,595 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the southern edge of Fredericktown Township and is bordered by Mondawmin to the east and southwest, L'Anse aux Meadows to the north and west, and White Marsh to the south. It forms part of the larger Elkton-Fredericktown-L'Anse aux Meadows metropolitan area. The first Europeans to come to this area were French fur traders in 1611 who traded with Native Americans. The first large settlement in what is now Elkton was made by John Smith in 1717 as a post on his way from Mount Vernon to trade goods with the Indians along the Potomac River. Smith's settlements were destroyed by Indian attacks in 1728, but he reoccupied his post two years later and named it Fort Neufchâtel after one of his holdings near present-day L'Anse Aux Meadows. In 1781, when Prince George's County was created from parts of Upper Maryland, Fort Neufchâtel became its capital. In 1814 it became an artillery fortifications during War of 1812 when Baltimore City was besieged by British forces under General James Kentshire. After being abandoned for many years, it reopened as an arsenal in 1848 and again served as a capital during Reconstruction following America's Civil War. It closed down again after World War II until it reopened as a small town on November 6th of that year (the same day that Elkton opened its doors for business). Today, Elkton remains a small town with strong community ties - both within its own borders and acrossPrince George's County - while also experiencing major growth due to new development around it such as via satellite TV services provider Comcast Xfinity/Time Warner Cable Arena which opened in late 2017; homebuilder Bethesda Homes LLC proposing construction of up to 248 units at their planned $255 million project adjacent to Interstate 95; Allstate Insurance Company expanding operations into what had been an auto dealership before becoming Allstate Auto Parts Inc.; Verizon Wireless opening up shop inside nearby Fredericktown Mall; Montgomery Suburban Bank having plans for over 100 housing units along Lakeview Avenue between Old Hwy 3014 & 15th St NW; Subway sandwich shop chain Carl’s Jr./Jr.'s starting up operations just outside town limits; etc.). A variety of events are held throughoutyearly including: Elmfest - an annual antique show typically held on or around September 8th; Arts Alive! - an annual arts festival typically held towards the end of May or early June which features local artists perform their work outdoors on various stages throughout downtown Elkton; Valley Fairgrounds Daytime Showcase Festival featuring country music performances every other week during summer season starting July 3rd through November 3rd generating approximately $2 million annually for local businesses & cultural organizations involved; 4 Corners Days Celebration featuring traditionalfolk artisans showcasing their skills from Saturday morning until lunchtime each day beginning September 10th thru Sunday October 9th serving as High Noon Parade & marketplace attraction unique among MD towns/cities...and more!
Elkton was founded in 1792 by John Elkton, who named it for his land grant of 1,000 acres. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Potomac River Railroad in 1859 and soon became a major center for agricultural production. In 1881, Elkton passed from local government to a municipal government under the leadership of Mayor A.J. McNaught. In 1907, Elkton became the first city in Maryland to be incorporated as an independent municipality. The city continued to grow during World War II as its population increased due to military recruitment and housing demand. In 1952, Elkton merged with neighboring Friendship Heights to form a single city known today as Friendship Heights/Elkton. During the 1970s and 1980s, Ekston underwent significant redevelopment which included the construction of several high-rise buildings including the City Hall and Park Place Towers. The economy of Ekston has grown recently through contributions from businesses such as Microsoft Corporation and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Inc., while also attracting new residents via annexation into Friendship Heights/Elkton over the past few years.
