Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, located on the eastern shore of Howard Lake. The population was 5,584 at the 2010 census. Elkton is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Fincastle, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Elkton" likely comes from the Potomac River and its tributaries that flow through this town. A post office called Elkton was established in 1818, and remained in operation until 1954. One of the first settlers in what is now Elkton was John Hargrave. He purchased land near present-day Elkton from the Indians in 1786. Hargrave named his new community after himself – "Hargrave's Ferry". In 1812, Thomas Ledyard built a cabin on what is now Parson's Mill Road in what is now downtown Elkton. Ledyard became one of early self-reliant farmers hereabouts and helped to develop this area into a prosperous center for trade and industry during the late 19th century. In 1876, John Thornton founded an oil refinery here which would become one of Maryland's leading producers of petroleum products for some 25 years until it closed its doors in 1957. The town also saw important development during World War I with the construction of thousands of housing units (the most numerous ever erected outside wartime New York City) as well as military barracks; these were followed by commercial buildings such as flour mills and automobiles manufacturing plants during postwar years until ELKTON TOWNSHIP VILLAGE -- which had been developed adjacent to UPMC Hospital since 1967 -- experienced rapid growth following several hurricanes that struck nearby jurisdictionslate last decade This village has seen even more dramatic transformation following incorporation intoPrince George’s County as part of LEGISLATIVE COUNTY'S INCORPORATED -- one hundred fifty thousand residents strong! Elkton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 1,611 at the 2010 census. Elkton is located on the east bank of the Potomac River and includes land on both sides of the river. It was originally part of Upper Marlboro Township and was incorporated as a separate municipality in 1872. Elkton has had two mayors: one from 1892 to 1896, and one from 1898 to 1902. The first settlers in what is now Elkton were Quakers who had come from nearby Fredericktown in 1785. They built their first home on the banks of the river about three miles downstream from present-day Elkton. They named their community after John Pugh, an early settler in Upper Marlboro Township who also founded Fredericktown (now Frederick). The first post office was established at this location in 1814; it was renamed Elkton in 1872 when it became a separate municipality. In 1892, Mayor John Hargrave resigned due to health reasons and was replaced by Mayor Arthur Fenton. In 1898 Mayor Gershon Sprague died suddenly after only months into his term; he was succeeded by Mayor Harry Healy with no election being held because Healy had already served two full terms as mayor before becoming eligible for reelection. In 1942, during World War II, Elmira Air Force Base operated out of nearby McCoy Air Force Base which caused significant traffic congestion around town since there were no roads available to connect either base with town center; as a result many stores closed down or moved out of town because they could not make profits without customers living close by instead of coming into town for shopping purposes only. As a result of this situation much economic activity stopped within Elkhton until things improved following the war when new businesses began opening up again including several restaurants that continue to operate today including some owned by current mayors Harry Healy Jr., Melvin Sheppard and Scott Laughlin Jr.. Elkton remains an agricultural community with over 60% Farms operation while 10% are small Manufacturing businesses like plumbing supplies & hardware store etc.; 3% are residential buildings such as apartment complexes etc.; remainder provides services such as truck stop restaurant/grill/bar etc.; government buildings like fire station/police substation etc.. There have been numerous leaders throughout history associated with Elkhton such as: Abraham Lincoln visited here twice during his presidency; James Kellar Sr., father-in-law of First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt ; rancher William Hargrave (founder/CEO Western Maryland Development Company); Cecil Bogan (founder Chesapeake Broadcasting Corporation);Harry Healy Jr.,Mayor 1983-1991¤t; Melvin Sheppard Mayor 1994-2001¤t;Scott Laughlin Jr.,Mayor 2001-present

The town grew rapidly and development accelerated during the 19th century, with many new buildings and streets built for residents of Elkton and surrounding villages. During World War II, Elkton played an important role in the munitions production at nearby White Sands Arsenal. The community also experienced rapid growth following the war, with more than 1,000 homes being built between 1951 and 1969. However, during the 1970s and 1980s, Elmton declined as its populationdeclined while its economy stagnated. Today, Elmton is a small community with few commercial properties and limited services available to its residents.
