Elkton is located on the southern border of Anne Arundel County and forms part of the Bowie Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Elkton were traders from Hackensack who landed there in 1664. It wasn't until 1727 that a permanent settler arrived when Captain John Smith purchased land here from the Algonquian people for £2 7s 6d. By 1800, there were over 100 settlers living here and by 1812 it had reached its peak with 9 taxable properties totaling . In 1814, Elkton was incorporated as a town under the name "Elkton". In 1834, Congress passed an act creating Prince George's County and providing for its formation; this Act designated "Elkton" as one of three towns within its boundaries. The county courthouse was built in 1835 and remains in use today. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Elkton served as military encampment for Confederate forces camped along Elkhart Road outside of Bowie Heights near present day Bowie Elementary School.
