Elkton, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 5,711 at the 2010 census. Elkton is known for its mills and industries, which have included such companies as United States Steel and Potomac Paper Company. The town also has a variety of shopping opportunities, including two department stores and two shopping malls. Elkton was founded by Nicholas Elkinton in 1824 as a small cabin on the western edge of what is now Prince George's County. At the time there were only about sixty people in the community. In 1827 Nicholas Elkinton married Anna Smith who had moved from Fredericktown, MD to live in Elkton with her family. Anna soon became involved with local politics and helped to develop the community into what it is today. She served as mayor from 1851-1854 and again from 1861-1865. After Anna's death in 1865, her husband continued to serve as mayor until his own death in 1869. He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery in Elkton. During World War II, Elkton played an important role within the war effort due to its importance as a munitions plant (the first such plant in America). The plant produced shells that were used by both sides of the conflict. The town also experienced some economic hardship during wartime; however, it bounced back quickly after the war ended. In 1957 Elfenton saw its first winner of an Emmy Award for excellence in locally produced television programming when WETA began production here of "The Patheos Show". In 1967 Earl Beal Jr., owner of nearby Potomac Paper Company purchased ELKTON MILLS from United States Steel Corporation for $5 million dollars - making him one of North America's largest millowners at that time In 1985 Elfenton Mills closed down but reopened under new management several years later In recent years there has been significant development taking place within Elkton; most notably being the opening of two new departments stores (one independent and one part of Macy's) as well as two major mall projects - One focusing on luxury items while another focuses primarily on general merchandise . A number of restaurants and bars have opened up around town since 2005 including: Capital Grille & Lounge (2005), Southern Tier BBQ (2006), Wood Grain Grill & Pub (2007), Pie Kitchen & Brewery(2008), Knockout Pizza(2009), Elephant Barbecue(2010) Additionally there are numerous street festivals throughout year featuring art exhibitions/shows/music performances etc

After the establishment of Montgomery County in 1834, Elkton continued to serve as its seat until it was moved to Rockville in 1859. The population of Elkton peaked at 10,000 in 1910 and declined during the Great Depression. However, it has slowly grown back since then, reaching a healthy population of over 11,000 today. The town is located on the confluence of two tributaries of the Potomac River – Elkington Creek and White Marsh Creek. These waterways formed the original land that now makes up Elkton. They flowed through rolling hills and valleys that were filled with trees and thickets of oak and hickory trees – characteristics that have remain unchanged to this day. The forested areas served as an important source of fuel for local homes and businesses until recently when development began to take hold in the area around town center. The first settlement at Elkton took place around 1781 when George Washington's men discovered a valuable piece of land on which they built their own farmsteads and houses. This early era saw heavy investment from settlers who realized potential profits derived from their tobacco crops. By 1860, however, most people had left Elmtown for better opportunities elsewhere because there were no more profitable fields to be found near Rockville County limits! The decline in population can be partially attributed to several factors such as technological advancements that made farming more difficult; disease brought by Indians; or lack thereof economic opportunity caused by World War II-related austerity measures within Montgomery County’s borders! In 1927, after years of planning by leaders within Rockville County’s government department (the “County Council”), Elmtown became the seat for government for all newly created Rockville Counties including Montgomery County! This move placed Elmtown squarely between both counties’ major centrally located towns – Bethesda & Silver Spring – making it one less commercial center subjected to city-centric developmentism on one side & rural-focused subdivisions on the other! It would not again serve as our county seat until 1959 when we moved into our current building downtown! Today, Elkhonton remains an important part of our county life due largely to its growing economy which depends heavily on services provided by nearby Montgomery Village/Rockville Center/Largo/Bel Air & Takoma Park/Hyattsville!!!
