This influx created a new culture and economy which helped support heavy immigration rates for decades until World War II caused increased Chinese or other international migration that reversed many of these trends. In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment effort taking place within the downtown area which has led to increasing retail activity as well as residential development along several streets near Central Park.
