Easton is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The town is located about 20 miles (32 km) east of Washington D.C., and its nearest city is Montgomery County to the south. The first settlement in what became Easton was made by farmers on land that now includes much of present-day Easton Township and portions of Upper Easton Township. In 1807, 3 men from Virginia set out from Fredericktown in Frederick County on horseback to explore a new land they had discovered west of the Potomac River. In 1865, General Robert E Lee's army retreated during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the Potomac River at Manassas Junction; his headquarters were located here for several months before he moved them back to Winchester Station near Fairfax Court House. In 1907, Eastern Pulp and Paper Company (EPSCO) was founded as a paper manufacturer based in nearby Bowie with operations eventually expanding into other products such as lumber and plastics until it ceased operations in 2001.
