Easton is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Chevy Chase Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and was founded by English colonists in 1689 as Stonington on the western shore of Patuxent River. In 1795, Easton became a part of Frederick County when it was made up of parts of Prince George's and Anne Arundel counties. In 1847, Frederick County was reduced to its present size when Montgomery County was created. In 1871, Baltimore City annexed parts of Frederick and Anne Arundel counties to form a new city known as Baltimore Township. In 1883, Easton received its own post office which lasted until 1914. In that year, the town became an independent municipality under the name Easton Township until it merged with nearby West Point to form Carroll Township in 1995. The town has since reverted back to its original name once again (although there are no online directories listing this). The first settler in what would become Easton arrived in 1689 aboard HMS "Providence" by land from North Carolina via Cape May Landing on Delaware Bay: they were led by Captain John Smith who named their settlement after himself - Stonewall Parish on Long Island Sound - following his successful expedition against Native Americans at Fort Nassau on September 14th that year (which ended with his death). From here they built a small fortress or stockade along what is now First Street which served as their main village for about one hundred years before being replaced by larger buildings around 1800 including brick/stone homes dating back to about 1795 called "The Plantation".
