Easton is one of two towns in Northern Virginia that are both located within 25 miles (40 km) of each other on Interstate 95. The first Europeans to visit what is now Easton were Dutch traders and farmers who traveled the Potomac River in search of new land to trade with. On November 3, 1634, John Smith and his party discovered a tract of land lying between Kensington and Takoma Park on the Rappahannock River. The group named their discovery "Easton" after one of their leader's daughter's articles about her father's find had been reprinted in England as early as 1635. In 1783, the eastern border of Prince George's County was moved westward by Order 9 from Baltimore to include present-day Easton Township including parts of Takoma Park and Kensington Village east of I-95 which bordered Cumberland County thenumbering 1 on the north side while Montgomery Countynumbered 2 across the river forming what is now Arlington County on its southern border This change left much rural land within Bethesda Township still unincorporated but inside Montgomery or Fairfax Counties subject to local governments controlled by those counties or sometimes by independent municipalities such as Hyattsville or Alexandria. In 1871, when Prince George's County was split into two portions due to western secession following American Civil War – One block south of Court House Rd./Old Allegany Hwy./Route 7 became Eastern Shore Borough while much rural annexed territory comprising parts of Bethesda/Montgomery Counties formed Western Shore Borough . At this time most eastern annexations took place near present day Friendship Heights & Crystal City with Rockville & Hyattsville taking over most western annexations . However annexation requests for lands east and northeast including today’s eastern shore continue to be made . In 1927 an act popularly known as “The Eastons Bill” became law giving residents living east and northeast outside Montgomery & Fairfax Counties voting rights in all meetings held by county councils within their respective jurisdictions regardless if they resided inside or outside those counties . Today many suburbs located east and northeast outside Montgomery & Fairfax Counties also enjoy voting rights because they fall under jurisdictional boundaries created during previous periods when those suburbs lay within prince germany

It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. The community was founded by John Easton in 1827 as a small settlement on the east bank of the Potomac River. By 1840, it had become an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and proximity to the capital city of Washington. In 1846, Easton became part of Frederick County when that county was established from parts of Prince George's and Baltimore counties. During World War II, Easton played an important role in the production of munitions for the military. Its mills produced everything from ammunition to aircraft parts. In 1948, Easton voters ratified a municipal charter which granted them full city status and gave them their own police department and fire protection system. The city also adopted a Declaration of Independence which was presented to Mayor Harry Carey Jr.. The community has since undergone several modernization efforts including extensive construction of new buildings in recent years which have led to increased economic development. Today, Easton is home to many businesses and professionals who continue its tradition as an important cultural center for eastern Maryland. The first settlers in what is now Easton arrived in 1784 from Yorkshire, England. They named their new community "Easton" after the then-principal town in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania which they had just traversed on their way to Maryland. The first post office was established in 1787 and was located at what is today's intersection of Ulysses Road and Old Mill Road. In 1814, Easton became part of Prince George's County when it was created from parts of Montgomery and Prince George's counties. In 1835, it became a part of newly formed Washington D.C., becoming one of its largest towns by population with over 20,000 residents by 1840. During World War II, Easton served as an important manufacturing center for munitions production; its Arsenal Ammunition Plant produced more than two million rounds of ammunition per day between 1942 and 1945 alone! In recent years, Easton has seen increasing development; its downtown has been renovated multiple times and new businesses have opened up including aPakistani restaurant called Lahore not too far from the old Arsenal Ammunition Plant site where many Noweast residents were born or raised!
