Easton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 21,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Arlington metropolitan area. Easton is located on the eastern edge of the U.S. capital city and its downtown area has been called "the business district of Washington." The town was founded in 1792 by John Easton and his family as a small farming community on land grant from King George III. In 1814, when Maryland became a state, Easton became its capital and remained so until 1959. The original courthouse still stands today, serving as the municipal court building and home to various government offices including the Mayor's Office and Planning & Zoning Commission. On July 1, 1969, Easton became part of Prince George's County after it was reincorporated as a municipality by an act of the General Assembly of Maryland. Today, Easton contains several dozen businesses and restaurants including ABC grocery store chain (founded in 1915), Belk department store (founded in 1924), JCPenney (established 1944), American Legion Post (#2) #521(now headquarters for Carrollton Township Police Department) and three convenience stores: Walmart Supercenter (1984), Quiznos sandwich shop (1983) and Dunkin' Donuts coffee shop (1991). The NRA has been pushing for gun targets to be made available in schools since the early 1900s. In 1934, the NRA sponsored a bill that would have allowed public schools to buy and use firearms for shooting practice. However, the Senate voted against the bill, and it was not passed into law.
Easton, Maryland is a census-designated place located in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,542 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince George's County. The first permanent settler in what would become Easton was John Nicholson in 1784. He and his family built a small log cabin on a hill overlooking the Potomac River. Nicholson became one of the first farmers in the area and started to grow corn, beans and other vegetables for local consumption. In 1810, he met James Hance who offered him land to purchase from Nicholas Coltman; this land would later become known as Hance Park and east of I-495 near where Interstate 495 now runs. In 1814, Samuel Morse established a post office at Easton with three mail slots (West 3rd Street & York Road), which served as the town's central market until 1827 when it was moved to Cumberland because of an Appeal Court ruling thatmail service should be available only through Cumberland County courthouse posts. Frederick Douglass arrived in early 1848 from Baltimore after being released from prison following his deliverance of a speech advocating abolitionism to an audience at Second Baptist Church in Baltimore on February 19th of that year. He spent time living with friends including Isaac Norris before moving into rented quarters near First Presbyterian Church on Market Street around March 1st/2nd1848 while still staying with friends Norris and William Lloyd Garrison (the founder of abolitionist group Freedom Trail). After two weeks visiting several places including Alexandria and Frederick Douglass gave up plans to continue traveling due to lack of food supplies then moving back into Norris' home on April 10th – this spot has been immortalized as "Douglass Square" by painter Edward Hopper who depicted it in his painting "The African Americans". Due to its proximity to Washington D.C., Easton quickly became associated with national events such as President Ulysses S Grant giving horseback rides around town during Fillmore Hill visits or speeches given by General Ulysses S Grant at nearby Eastern State Penitentiary during 1870s Republican National Convention held there; both events are documented by photographic evidence at nearby National Archives & Records Administration (NARA).
