Easton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore- Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 18th century times, Easton was a small town on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. In 1792 it became a part of Prince George's County and added to its name in honor of General Edward Howe (1739–1814). The first post office in Easton opened in 1802. One reason for the growth of Easton was its location on the Potomac River opposite Georgetown and Anacostia City on older Federal land that had been leased from these cities by Congress during the Confederation period (1815–1821). The river also served as a transportation artery and helped develop Bethlehem as an industrial center after 1800. The early mills built along or near the Potomac included one built by Nicholas Morrell in 1798 and another by John Brown about 1810. These mills continued to operate until World War II when they were replaced by larger plants located downstream due to technological advances and changed water supplies around that time. During much of this time there was little development east of Route 1A which bisected Prince George's County from Baltimore County through present day Laurel and Bowie counties. This lack of development led to high levels of poverty within Easton although some properties did become valuable because they were close to important transportation routes or because they offered other opportunities for economic advancement such as manufacturing or real estate investment

Easton is a small city in Carroll County, Maryland, United States. The population was 3,500 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County and home to Easton Presbyterian Church and Easton High School. On December 1, 1792, a group of settlers from Virginia arrived in what is now Easton and founded the town on land that they had claimed as part of their colony. In 1814, Congress allocated land to Carroll County as part of the Louisiana Purchase. This made Easton one of the largest communities in Maryland outside Prince George's County. The first post office in Easton was established on July 10, 1814. It served the community until 1834 when it moved to nearby Harford City because of difficulties getting mail through Westmoreland County. The first courthouse was built in 1838 and remains standing today. On November 7, 1861, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Confederate General Robert Ewell led his cavalry into town after unsuccessfully attacking Ulysses S Grant's army near Winchester Junction near present-day Fredericktown Heights in Charles counties southwest of Baltimore; these operations are known as Battlefields eastonensis and were considered one of the bloodiest fought by Confederate troops across Maryland during the war. In 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant advanced through what is now eastern Montgomery County towards Washington Crossing which occurred just south of present day Easton between Harperstown Road and Cumberland Road; this action marks one end point for Union General Ulysses S Grant's Overmountain Campaignsweeping southern Marylanderenthwest Pennsylvania during April–May 1865 defeating all Confederate forces encountered thereby ending any hopes for an Eastern Virginia Invasion by Confederate Forces).
