The first settlement in what is today Easton was made on February 14, 1765 by John Nicholson and his family as part of the original land grant to Christopher Gist from Sir Robert Morrell. On July 1, 1824, Easton was incorporated as a town under the name "Easton". It became an official U.S. town on November 5th, 1924 when it amalgamated with Centreville and Silver Spring ( afterward known as Takoma Park). The Town of Easton has its beginnings in early colonial times when traders from England came to this region looking for resources such as coal and timber. Coal mining started in the 1870s but production stopped after two decades because competition from nearby Baltimore led to a decline in prices for coal; however, logging continued until the early 1900s at which time production resumed thanks to advances in technology that allowed easier access to hardwood lumber than ever before. In 1863 John Nicholson received a patent for 8 square miles (20 km²) of land east of Fredericktown including what is now easternmost Easton Township; this patent marked the beginning of development within what would becomeEaston Township proper. That year also saw construction begin on what would become Nicholson's Logging Company House - one of only three remaining examples of mid-19th centurylogging buildings still standing in all or most parts of Maryland (the others are located in Elkridge and Bowie). A few years later another Englishman arrived who had something quite different in mind: he wanted to make money by selling goods he had fashioned himself using Indian labor – tools, materials and even ideas about methods used by Native Americans themselves while living among them without revealing too much information to avoid capture or conversion by European settlers! This man was James Macdonough – better known as Jay Cooke – and his business soon grew into one of the largest mercantile operations operating out there then or since! But just because Jay Cooke could do things nobody else could didn't mean that everything he did worked out perfectly; although some successes did come his way like developing new transportation techniques for shipping goods long distances overland through mountains… those were definitely not always easy feats! In fact it often took many tries before anything actually got done! Consequently we can testify that sometimes success does not come easy no matter how well somebody thinks they're doing! And so it was with Jay Cooke too: some projects turned out great while others were failures but all were worth trying again next time around!
