Easton is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 12,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The first European settlers in this area were English colonists who arrived in 1683 and named it " Easton" after their home town of Eastbourne in Sussex, England. In 1727, General James Wolfe's army destroyed a French fort at West Point on Long Island while besieging Fort Duquesne on the Eastern Shore of Maryland during the Battle of Mount Royal. As a result of this victory and subsequent British land gains across much of North America, King George II made Easton a township on December 10, 1727. In 1814–15, during the War for Northern Independence (1812–1813), General John Pope's Third Corps under Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Brock captured two French forts at Middlebrook Heights east of present day Easton Township and burned them to prevent their capture by Canadian forces under Major General John Armstrong. This event is considered to be one of the earliest examples of military engagement between American and Canadian soldiers. In 1847, when Frederick Douglass moved from slavery to freedom in Maryland as part of his Underground Railroad Movement, he also came to live in Easton where he taught school until his death in 1895. He was buried there with full honors beside other abolitionists such as Susan B Anthony and Daniel Webster who had also been buried nearby beforeDouglass' arrival in 1865. This law also banned licensed dealers from selling Ammunition that would damage firearms or endanger public safety (Goudreau). Although these laws were effective at reducing gun violence within America during the late 30s and early 40s, they eventually expired due to lack of funding (Norman). In 1975, another major amendment was made to Public Law 98-618 known as The Brady Bill. This amendment required all handgun buyers who could afford it must receive free unrestricted firearm ammo when signing up for a license (Ferguson). Today’s version of The Brady Bill still requires purchase free firearm ammo but only applies if buyer is over 21 years old
