It is part of the Washington-Alexandria-Hyattsville, DC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Cumberland was John Smith in 1751. The present day town was founded on December 12, 1831 by Mr. and Mrs. James Auld from New York City as a place for them to retire after their many years of service in the U.S Army during the Mexican-American War. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his forces were headquartered at Cumberland for a time before he moved his headquarters to Fort Harrison near Washington D.C., later becoming Chief of Staff to General Philip Sheridan at Mission Ridge in Virginia during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1898, when Congress passed an act designating Prince George's County as an area for development within which special provisions must be made for Negro citizens because of their presence there since before that date, Cumberland became one of those areas and it has continued to grow ever since with its current population over 8,000 people today! In recent years Cumberland has been home to several large companies such as Walgreen's Pharmacy & Markets (now known as Walgreens), Tyson Foods Inc., JBL ENTERTAINMENT LLC - home entertainment products company - and IMAX America Corporation among others! Today there are several churches located throughout downtown Cumberland including Christ Episcopal Church which dates back to 1752; United Methodist Church which traces its roots back to 1793; Presbyterianism also has a strong presence withlynched services being held here often outside on beautiful days like July 4th or Independence Day!
