Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,582 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Prince George's County. Cumberland was founded by British colonists in 1758 as part of the larger colony of Caroline. The town was named for General Sir John Cumberland and became incorporated as a city on July 1, 1892. The first European settlers to arrive in what is now Prince George's County were Scottish immigrants who arrived in 1758 during the Seven Years' War. They built a small cabin near present-day Cumberland and called it "Lanark." In 1760, one group of these Scotsmen led by Captain John Fraser founded Cumberland Plantation on land that they had acquired from the Indians at Battle Ground (now Midtown). The original farmhouse still stands today and has been used as a post office since 1824. In 1821, Captain John Aiken purchased land adjacent to Captain Fraser's farm for $2200 which he plans to use for agricultural purposes only. He named this new tract "Cumberland" after General Sir John Cumberland who had commanded British forces during the American Revolution and before that in Europe against Louis XVI of France. After some debate among their fellow Scottish farmers about whether or not to name their new community after an important military leader, they settled on naming it after Colonel Alexander Macdonald who served with them during the war and afterwards represented them in Parliamentarian circles at home and abroad before dying suddenly aged 71 years old in 1800 without children or heirs apparent. When Charles Townships were created within Prince George's County in 1814, much attention was paid to developing areas lying east of Queen Anne Street between Third Street (present-day Mount Pleasant) and Fourth Street (now Calvert Avenue). One such area lay within what is now Cumberland Township including current day Middlebury Heights although only 6 acres were bought and developed there between 1814-1816 due largely to lack of interest from local citizens until after Captain Fraser's death six years later when family members returned home from England with additional land - enough for another plantation but not too much so that another village could be built there also - planting tobacco under irrigation systems utilizing water provided by two small creeks flowing through his forested property northeast of present day Middlebury Heights Road/Old Hickory Trail across from where he located his plantation house still standing today - contemporary accounts say it took three months getting those water pipes put together despite being supervised by an experienced engineer; however construction began nonetheless on October 16th 1816 following orders received from Governor Thomas Ewing courtesy of Lord Baltimore himself! Captain Fraser left behind him two families who operated his plantation until its sale at auction block subsequent year to Elijah Henson Sr., James Henson Jr., Samuel Henson etc.; all descendants remain living here today with over ninety percentcontinue production here on large scale ever since! Over time other companies have come into operation on this site such as: J & W Tobacco Company 1911-1915; Bunche Brothers 1915-1920; National Tobacco Corporation 1922-1929; Bethlehem Steel Works 1929-1939; Montgomery Ward 1939-1949 etc.; finally becoming part of current day BlueCross BlueShield company 1986 when plant closed down due primarily ToM competition although some continued operations up until recent days especially around holidays like Memorial Day weekend etc.) Colonial Williamsburg Foundation operates visitor center open daily 9am thru 4pm included free Admission weekends 10am thru 3pm
