Cumberland, Maryland is a town in the U.S. state of Maryland and is the easternmost town on the Potomac River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 9,711. Cumberland is located in Prince George's County, on the border of Montgomery and Washington counties. The town was founded by English colonists in 1751 as part of an effort to settle land along the river that had been promised to them by their then-governor Lord Baltimore. The first permanent settler arrived in 1753 and named it after King George II of Great Britain; this name change came about because many colonists found Cumberland too wild for farming purposes. In 1807, Cumberland became one of five towns within Frederick County (the other four being Aberdeen, Annapolis Junction, Salisbury and Bowie). In 1812, Congress created Montgomery County from portions of Frederick and Prince George's Counties which were then divided among themselves as part of a process known as " partitioning ". This left Cumberland without representation in either county government but with its own Board of Trade which conducted local trade activities such as fishing and lumbering. The first courthouse in Cumberland was built in 1814; it burned down two years later but was replaced by a more recent building that still stands today. One significant event during early years here was when John Dickinson offered his services as sheriff to help quench some racial tensions that had arisen between white settlers and Native Americans living near the community. Dickinson acquitted all charges against him before eventually dying at age 69 while serving out his sentence in prison outside Boston due to illness contracted while incarcerated there (he would be posthumously pardoned). Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 7,383 at the 2010 census. Cumberland was named for the Cumberland Gap in Virginia and became part of the United States after the American Revolution. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cumberland were French traders who explored the area in 1603. The Royal African Company established a trading post here in 1619 and built a fort on land donated by Sir John Smith. In 1776, during the American Revolution, General George Washington landed his army at Cumberland Gap and fought its way up the Potomac River to Alexandria, Virginia. Aftermath of that battle led Congress to pass an act recognizing Pennsylvania as an independent state on November 2nd of that year. In 1851, advances were made in retail transportation when The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad completed its line from Baltimore to Cumberland Falls (now known as Bowie). This new industry stimulated development along Route 1 which soon came to be called "The Main Street of America." By 1900 more than one-third of all jobs within three miles of downtown had been created by this new sector of business activity alone. As manufacturing moved out into other states during World War II, much Of this heavy production took place at plants located near Bowie and Rockville Centre; but Cumberland still retains its prominence within local commerce as a center for light industrial production including paper products and plastics such as Acrylics

The town was named after George Washington, who had been President of the United States at the time it was founded.
