The original white settlers in Cumberland were indentured servants from Virginia who had migrated to Pennsylvania to work on plantations during the early 1800s. In 1777, when King George III granted merchant John Smith a charter to settle a party of Virginians along the Potomac River outside present-day Cumberland, he named it after his Welsh county of Cumbria which he had recently visited. The first house built in what later became Cumberland was erected just east of what is now Main Street on October 7th, 1778 by Thomas Dixon and his family under contract with Governor Dinwiddie for $5 per month with no possibility that they would ever leave their new land until they received free passage home should they experience any problems or challenges within their new settlement; this guarantee still exists to this day as part of the town's history and civic traditions In 1847 Congressman James Kenedy introduced a bill on behalf of Prince George's County which would have created Cumberland as an independent municipality separate from Prince George's County but it never made it out of committee because there were many objections from within Prince George's County itself about relinquishing control over such a small community that only numbered around 100 residents at its peak On December 2nd 1861 incorporation took place when all towns in Prince George’s County were placed under one common government by order issued by Governor Oliver Ellsworth CumberLAND TODAY The citizens and businesses working hard every day to keep our streets clean and safe are why we call ourselves "CumberLAND".
