In 1951, Kapp Brothers merged with two other companies to form Associated-Bracelet Manufacturers Incorporated (ABC). ABC produced sunglasses through 1957 when it merged with Seagram & Sons Corporation (SB). At this point, SB had become one of the leading manufacturers of sunglasses in America. During World War II, many Cumberland residents enlisted in military service or served as part of WACs (Women's Army Corps). After the war ended, many people who had served were discharged from military service and needed new glasses or replacement lenses for their old frames. Many people used friends or family members' shops to buy new glasses because there were no majorEyeglass stores around at that time! In 1957, ABC merged with two other companies to form Seagram & Sons Corporation (SB). At this point, SB had become one of the leading manufacturers of sunglasses in America! Cumberland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 17,814 at the 2010 census. It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in the early 18th century. Cumberland became a county seat in 1838 and has been since then its largest town. The towns of Cumberland and Beltsville were founded as separate settlements near present-day Cumberland Junction in 1818 by Thomas Line and his brother James Line. The line of the Potomac River connected these two villages and made them one unit. When Baltimore & Ohio Railroad reached Cumberland in 1847, it linked with Baltimore through Beltsville to create one large railroad system throughout Maryland. The town served as its originating point until 13 July 1870 when it became an independent municipality under the name of Cumberland Township due to its proximity to Baltimore City. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down buildings in Beltsville while besieging Union forces at Fort Meade on 14 July 1861. This event led to increased tensions between Unionists and Confederate sympathizers throughout Prince George's County and even into neighboring Frederick County; violence continued for several months after the burning until finally subsided following US military victory over Confederate forces at Antietam Creek on 16 October 1861 (three days before Abraham Lincoln was elected President). In 1865, when Maryland became a state following the passage of the Unconstitutional Amendment of 1865, Cumberland received township status from Prince George's County but retained its own government within that entity; this arrangement ended on 1 January 1903 with creation of Carroll County as a result of mergers among seven other counties in Maryland caused by William Hance's proposal for division of western Shorey Island into three congressional districts (Cumberland Valley represented District 3, Eastern Shorey Island Represented District 4 and Western Shorey Island Represented District 5).). On 15 August 1907 Frank Swartzell purchased property comprising all present day CumberLAND Twp.,Beltsville Twp.,and portions annexed from both Twps./BeltsVILLE & CUMBERLAND VALLEY from T J Roper (the last owner having expired intestate). On 10 December 1907 he filed an application with Washington D C for land grant #2146 which would include what is now known as Upper Marlboro Village/Rangeley Road Estates including much older " Rangeleys" now part of Upper Marlboro Town stretching back over 350 years! Frank Swartzell had already started developing this area prior to our incorporation date! He did this also while living out his final days here – so we are justIFYING he did this actually!!!
