Cumberland is a small town in central Maryland, United States. The population was 5,589 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cumberland County. The town was founded in 1736 and named after Sir John Cumberland, 1st Baronet of Halesowen Manor. The first permanent European settlers arrived in what is now Cumberland County in 1736 when Captain John Smith discovered land that he thought might be a part of Virginia. He named his discovery "Cumberland" after the then-viceroy of India, Lord Cumberlands territory in North America as well as his own baronetcy. In 1740, General George Washington used Cumberland as his headquarters while fighting against Governor Thomas Johnson's forces at Princeton Heights. The town was platted in 1748 by Colonel Edward Meade and Major James Mac kilpatrick who had been sent by British Army Major General William Howe to purchase more land for resettlement purposes near Fredericktown which he had renamed "Montgomery." Mac kilpatrick built a ferry across the Potomac River from Cumberland Ferry Landing on the other side to Montgomery before beginning construction on what would become known as Meade's Mills which were completed in 1750. In 1802, Congress created Cumberland County out of parts of Prince Edward and Cecil counties following its passage of the Organic Act (20 U.S.C., § 811). This act created new U.S territorial jurisdiction within Maryland which included much of modern-day Delaware and Pennsylvania along with portions of Maryland including most of present-day CumberLAND COUNTY southward to Patuxent River (now Howard County) where it joined Cecil County to form what is now Delaware County (the eastern border being York City). In 1813–14 during Andrew Jackson's federalist campaign for president, some Tories living near Georgetown gathered enough evidence to identify him as an illegitimate son born outside England via an affair with one Miss Minton which Jackson had hidden from public view until she married him at age 16 and bore him two children: Rachel WoodhullJackson and Andrew Jackson Jr.. When asked about this fact by reporters during his campaign appearances, Jackson replied cryptically that "I am an American" but did not give further information because he did not want people trying to lie about him; this response earned him widespread ridicule among political rivals throughout his eight years in office as president although he always denied paternity or knowledge thereof! One account has even alleged that such secret behavior may have been part of a larger conspiracy plan involving high-ranking members of both parties! The allegation has never been substantiated though it would make for interesting history trivia! After leaving office, however, he became associated with Missouri politics until his death at 75 years old in 1885! Many residents from what is now Delaware/Cecil Counties relocated there during this time period including many who moved back into downtown Bethesda after their homes were destroyed by fire setters during the 1960s housing market crash! In 1925–26 when President Calvin Coolidge inaugurated US Highway 50 through central Maryland etching "Crossing Over" onto a boulder located just outside present day Aberdeen Creek village boundary these marks served as a reminder that Route 50 crossed over into Pennsylvania prior to its current routing through downtown Bethesda
