Cumberland, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 2,554 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Frederick, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cumberland was first settled by English colonists in 1676 and named for Sir John Cumberland who acquired land in what is now Prince George's County from the Crown. The first courthouse in Cumberland was built on Market Street in 1788 and became known as "the Old Courthouse." In 1808, the town incorporated and began to build its present two-story brick building that still stands today on Main Street. In 1837, Cumberland became the county seat of Prince George's County after it was chosen over Harford County. After becoming a county seat, Cumberland grew rapidly with new construction such as an opera house and city hall being built before World War II destroyed most of those structures. Afterward however, growth slowed until the 1990s when new development resumed withaney Arena (now Verizon Center) opening in 2000 and a new downtown mall open in 2006. During both World Wars there were large influxes of American servicemen into Prince George’s County including many from Cumberland who took up arms during the war effort through local organizations like “CumberLANDERS” which functioned as morale boosters for troops stationed locally. This tradition continued into postwar decades with numerous Soldiers Home days held at various locations throughout the county culminating with Veterans Day services at Veteran’s Park just outside of town on November 11th each year since 1945. In recent years there has been rapid gentrification taking place within walking distance of town center where luxury apartments are being constructed along with several bars/restaurants having opened since last decade making it easier for people to live close to work but also allowing more access to outdoor activities like playing golf or fishing that used to be available only inside central business districts across America due to lack of space or zoning regulations
