Cumberland, Maryland is home to one of the most significant gun lights in American history. The first gun light system in Cumberland was installed at Fort McHenry in 1814. Thisgunlight system allowed for the safe transportation of artillery rounds from the fort to their destinations on warships. The gunsights were also used as a means of communication between Officers and men on duty. The gun light system has been used throughout America, and can be found at various military sites such as Fort Sill, Oklahoma; West Point, New York; and Fort Hood, Texas. In 2017, the Gun Light Museum was opened in Cumberland to display over 150 years ofgunlight history.

Cumberland, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 9,571. Cumberland is one of two towns in Prince George's County; the other being Upper Marlboro. The town was founded on July 1, 1795 and named for Cumberland Township in Pennsylvania. The first settlers to Cumberland were white men from Virginia who had come overland as part of the First Group of British colonists who landed at Jamestown on April 14, 1607. This group included John Smith and his band of Adventurers who had traveled upriver from Virginia to find a new home for themselves after their failed attempt to overthrow English monarchy that same year. The first permanent settler in what would become Cumberland Township was Major Robert McCormick who built a cabin near present day Executive Drive and Market Street in 1795-96. He was followed by his son Daniel McCormick (1798-1868), grandson John Eager McCormick (1814-1920), great grandson Hiram Percy McCormick (1892-1970) and others until about 1800 when most of the white man settler community died out due primarily to smallpox epidemics which swept through Prince George's County during that era. The first school in Cumberland township was opened on October 12, 1812 by Reverend Samuel Morse with instruction offered in reading and writing using only natural language then available to those without classical education or access to books printed abroad. Classes were held every Monday evening until 1815 when an academy/school building became available onpresent day Executive Drive adjacent to where the Post Office now stands. In 1819 a public road leading from Lower Marlboro northward through present day Cumberlandtownwas completed making it possible for goods and passengers travelling along that road to reach Upper Marlboro quickly instead of having to go around LowerMarlboro via Georgetown or WestmoreLAND . That same year also saw the opening of Mrs Anna Fenton’s “Dueling Oaks” grocery store located at present day Main Street between WestmoreLAND & Executive Drive which became an early success story for local businesswomen during this time period as did many others like Mrs Fenton over subsequent years until her death in 1951 finally bringing an end thereto.. To solve this problem,gun lights were developed. The earliest versions of these devices consisted of four small light bulbs connected to a battery, which would be worn on the person’s belt and used to signal other hunters when they should stop shooting. As technology evolved, so too did gun lights. In the 1920s, an additional light bulb was added to each device and these became known as “battery-operated gunlights.” These devices could be operated with either your hand or arm by using one of two levers on the front of the unit. In the 1930s, Gun Lights began being produced in larger sizes and eventually became popular among huntress and fishermen alike. Today, many different types of gun lights are available on the market including electronic models which can be controlled through a computer or phone app!
