In 1814, Cumberland saw its first presidential election when George Washington was elected as president with 94% of the vote to John Adams' 8%. In 1838, Baltimore's Railroad Company built a line from Cumberland to Uniontown which made it easier for people to get food and goods they couldn't bring with them from Baltimore. This led to more businesses opening up in Cumberland and made it a fashionable city center where embassies were located today. The start of World War I (1914-18) caused many businesses closed down because there was no export trade available due to German blockade laws; however soon after Germany began unrestricted submarine warfare against Allied shipping (1915), most businesses reopened thanks to new export markets open up due to increased military procurement needs across all sectors throughout Europe at that time. Cumberland, Maryland is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 7,151 at the 2010 census. Cumberland is one of the most significant towns in Prince George's County and has been a center for social and political activity for centuries. The first settlers to what is now Cumberland were Hugh de la Warre and his wife Alice of Falaise in 1296. In 1676, John Smith traveled through Prince George's County on his way to war with the Indian tribes. He stayed at the house of Jabez Sharpe where he was entertained by Hugh de la Warre and his family. After Smith's journey, Jabez Sharpe donated land to make Cumberland an official town on October 10th, 1676. The first store in Cumberland opened its doors on December 1st, 1795. The original post office which opened in 1836 served as the center for local trade until it was moved to West Falls Church in 1954. The current courthouse was built between 1906-1907 following a donation from Mrs Jane Addams who had heard about plans to build a courthouse in nearby Bowie but could not afford it herself. During World War II, Cumberland became known as "the birthplace of American democracy." Numerous patriotic events took place here including the drafting of Constitution day notices (May 25th), Egg Harbor Naval Base parade (October 3rd), Elizabethtown celebration (November 11th) and more It also played an important role during the Cold War when many NATO allies visited during various visiting periods; these visits generated news stories all over America that helped promote friendly relations with those countries
