Cumberland, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. Cumberland is home to the Cumberland Mall and the Cumberland Zoo. It also has a small airport which is used for general aviation purposes. The first settlement in what is now Cumberland was made by French colonists in 1676. The area that now includes Cumberland was first inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Native Americans. In 1777, Colonel John Sturgis built Fort Anne on land that he had purchased from the Lenape. Fort Anne became one of the early settlements in Prince George's County and served as a military post until 1814 when it was replaced by Fort Meade. In 1819, President James K. Polk renamed Fort Meade after Major General Andrew Jackson who had won an important victory against Mexico at Buena Vista Creek near present day Mount Vernon Square in Arlington County while commandant of First Corps Army during the Mexican-American War. In 1832, Captain John Smith founded another early settlement called Westville on land that he had acquired from the Lenni Lenape Indians under grants given them by Govan William Alexander Forbes of Virginia colony fame before his death in 1796. This settlement failed due to competition from other nearby settlements and within two years Smith sold all his lands east of Westville to Drury Lewis for £3 sterling per acre (equivalent to $210 U .S .). Drury Lewis built a log cabin known as "The White House" there which served as headquarters for many settlers before it burned down in 1865 following a stormy night walk by its owner Jedediah Morse Sr., Jr.. A new settlement called Uniontown was established about three miles northwest of present day Cumberland on December 29, 1827 by Nathan Bedford Forrest who had been appointed Indian agent for Prince George's County under Territorial Governor Robert Ewing Hunt.* Uniontown became one of several small communities formed around Baltimore during this period due to shortages of labor caused by various Unions being formed throughout America such as Canaries Wharf Company; Star Wharf Company; Baltimore & Ohio Railroad; American Shipbuilding Corporation; Great Northern Railway etc.).* After Uniontown’s establishmentviolent conflicts began between its residents over control of access to water supplies and grazing areas* including raids into other communities* it ceased operations entirely within two years*. By 1830 only 10 men lived there*, most of whom were transient squatters*. A few weeks later damage occurred to Uniontown’s storehouse resulting in loss of valuable goods which led to increased efforts at regulation*. As pressure developed from neighboring communities surrounding Baltimore caused mainly via job seekers migrating upstream *Uniontown eventually resumed operations with 5 men living there† but again ended abruptly within 2 years†.* In 1840 Nicholas Building erected a large frame structure on what is now Water Street near I-95 which served as Post Office and School until 1861 when it burned down along with much else associated with Frontier Days celebrations held annually at that location since1829†.* By 1850 only 2 people still lived in Uniontown*, both women† *.
