Cumberland, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. Cumberland was founded on December 24, 1737 by Colonel John Campbell and his wife Susanna. The first courthouse in Cumberland was built in 1751. In 1868, the town became part of Frederick County. It has a population of about 10,000 people as of the 2010 census. The original settlers in what is now Cumberland were farmers who came overlanders from Pennsylvania during the Great Migration of the 1800s. They started farming around 1736 and built their own homes near present-day Cumberland Gap Road and Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard. The area that would become Cumberland was first populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who hunted and gathered wild plants and animals for food. After several thousand years living among humans, these natives began to forget how to speak English well enough to trade goods with other tribes or build boats for fishing or travel across rivers. By 1700 they had all died out except for a few survivors roaming around present-day Prince George's County). On December 24th, 1737, Colonel John Campbell organized a group of men under his command to found what would eventually become Cumberland on land granted them by Lord Baltimore (the then Governor of Upper Canada). The group numbered only 20 strong but quickly grew in size due to the enlistment of others including Captain William Petty who served as expeditionary commander at Fort Mifflin during the Indian outbreak known as King's War (1754-1755). That winter more men arrived from Virginia via ferryboat which brought many new families into town including those from nearby Upper Marlboro Heights where tents had been set up for travelers awaiting passage downriver on HMS "Nova". Soon after this initial influx several stores were opened within sight of each other serving both local residents and pilgrims departing for various religious services along Route 66 northward towards Washington D . C . On Christmas day 1737 an important event occurred when General Wolfe's column crossed the Potomac River at modern day Arlington Heights Bridge destroying much property along its route while engaging British forces under Lt.-General James McPherson near Mount Vernon south of Washington D . C . Reactions throughout America were mixed with some celebratory news articles reporting200 British casualties while another article denounced Wolfe's action calling it a "monstrous victory" which solidified public support behind General Cornwallis' successful resistance against Britishers invading North America
