In 1840, when Prince George's County became part of Baltimore City, many residents chose to move their families into what are now eastern Montgomery County or southern Howard Counties because of social opportunities available there. However, by 1850 most of these newcomers had left for other parts of Maryland orVirginia due to poor economic conditions in those areas following Reconstruction-era America which followed Civil War efforts by both Northern and Southern armies to re-establish white supremacist rule over black people across all levels of society including slavery and freedom under Ulysses S Grant’s “Emancipation Proclamation” issued December 1st 1863. Continuing economic struggles during this time caused many farmers to sell their land within Prince George's County for industrial purposes such as coal mining or manufacturing plants until after World War II when rural communities regained some semblance of stability through agricultural production alone again becoming an important factor contributing to local economies throughout much of suburban Maryland until recently. One exception was Bethesda where non-urban residential Development began shortly before World War II giving rise to significant retail spaces within walking distance for civilians as well as businesses providing essential services like restaurants supplied by area farmers/ Manufacturers rather than single professional developers."Bethesda: A Town Reborn" Even though post war growth slowed somewhat typical suburban pattern emerged with bedroom communities clustering around major shopping districts while strip malls dotted rural areas outside those districts until recent decades when suburban sprawl has essentially replaced older housing patterns
