Cumberland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington-Baltimore-Arlington, MD Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European permanent residents in Cumberland were German Protestants who settled here in 1787. They established a small trading post on the Susquehanna River and named it "Niederheyden" (meaning lower heath). In 1821, they founded what would become Cumberland Township, which became a municipality on April 14, 1901. In 1851, Anne Arundel County was created from portions of Prince George's and Montgomery Counties and included Cumberland Township; as such it formed one side of the county line with Baltimore City until 1907 when Montgomery County seceded to become its own independent jurisdiction. Most of what now makes up Cumberland Township originated as farmland donated by wealthy farmers in response to an act of Congress known as the Homestead Act of 1862 which provided for citizens to purchase land south of Frederick Douglass Boulevard for $2 per acre (the equivalent today of about ). This area now includes much of northern Mount Airy neighborhood as well as parts of Bowie and Silver Spring neighborhoods. The pioneer settlers had large gardens that still exist today with many acres devoted to crops such as corn and peas while others developed homes made out wood or brick faced with stone or tile roofs providing heat and light during winter months while serving also as workshops for manufactures (watchmakers being especially prominent). A Methodist church was built in 1871 on land donated by Rev John Geddes Waddell. A public school opened in 1865 which served students from kindergarten through college level until 1975 when it closed due to budget cuts but has been reopened several times since then under different names including: Park Elementary School (1875), Reformed Congregational Church School (1878), Bethesda Intermediate School/Metropolitan Middle School/Elementary Annex 1978-2009 (2009-present), Druid Heights Elementary School/Middle East Christian Academy 2007-Present
Cumberland, Maryland is located in the Central Maryland area. It is bordered by Prince George's County to the east and west, Anne Arundel County to the north, and Howard County to the south. The town of Cumberland was founded in 1777 by Samuel Cumberland and named after his extensive land holdings in that area. The first post office in Cumberland was established in 1779. In 1819, Cumberland became a Township within Prince George's County. In 1832, it was combined with neighboring communities of West Milford and Easton to form what is now known as Cumberland Township. On May 16, 1865, during the Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewell attacked Union forces at Battle of Antietam Creek near present-day Cumberland Township. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides and ended before any significant damage was done. In 1865, about two-thirds of all residents living within Unincorporated Columbia (the incorporated part of Prince Georges County) were also living within Cumberland Township due to its close proximity to Columbia City as well as its share of agricultural land for farming purposes. As a result of this concentration of population inside one municipality for most ofMarylanders' history until very recently, much notable cultural heritage has developed here including architecture such as gingerbread houses dating back to the early 1800s; traditional music events like cornpone night; Folk Art exhibitions which take place every few years; and many more small businesses that have justified their presence inside one large community over time despite having little or no connection with each other outside their respective townships/municipalities
