In 1971, all but one of the original six stores closed down due to competition from Walmart and other retail outlets within the town limits. Today, only one store remains open within downtown Cumberland with most activity taking place inside of the old courthouse building which is now used as a museum. The town site was chosen because it was close to an existing ford on the Susquehanna River and its natural defenses made it an ideal place to trade with Native Americans. In 1784, when Captain John Smith discovered what he thought were two British colonies on this side of the river, he named one of them Cumberland after his home province of Nova Scotia. In 1814–1815 General Robert Ewell led a coalition against Lord Cornwallis during the American Revolution. When General Cornwallis surrendered at Appomattox Court House in April 1865, Cumberland joined him as part of Prince George's County in Maryland and became part of the Union Army following the war. After World War II, Cumberland became a center for manufacturing throughout northwestern America due to its location near Volkswagen production plants and other major companies nearby. In recent years, however, industrial jobs have been replaced by service jobs in various fields such as foodservice or health care from larger businesses that have moved into central Pennsylvania or Baltimore proper. Today's Cumberland has many examples of architecture developed during its heyday as a manufacturing center: such as Prentice Hall High School which opened in 1957; Chrysler Plant No 2 (now headquarters for Lockheed Martin) which began operations in 1961; and Easton Rubber Company plant No 1 (now headquarters for Raytheon) which opened in 1962 are all still standing today and provide evidence that local industries could survive even during tough times

But during the Mexican–American War (1846–1848), Cumberland was sacked by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell; many residents were killed or captured including Mayor John Aiken who was taken prisoner before he could be executed. The city's fortunes changed when President James Kenedy offered it to Union forces as part of Lincoln's Gettysburg Address; within two years of its incorporation as a town, Cumberland had become one of the largest slaveholding settlements in Maryland with nearly 100% white ownership. After Union troops burned down much of downtown in 1865 during the American Civil War, however, most black residents emigrated or were forcibly removed from their homes into newly created internment camps throughout Maryland until after World War II; today only a few scattered African Americans remain in town (most notably among descendants of those forced out during World War II). Today's economy is based primarily on government services such as education and health care while some smaller businesses have developed around transportation and tourism opportunities along with other innovative ideas such as online shopping malls that allow customers to purchase items online before they are delivered to their doorstep
