By 1834, college attendance had become compulsory in Prince Georges County, and by 1848, it was also mandatory in Maryland. In 1886, University of Maryland president James A. Eastin purchased land east of College Park from some of the original landowners for use as a campus. On July 1, 1907, the University moved from its previous location on Druid Hill to its present site atCollege Park.
