On November 3rd 1837 this post became an incorporated town with Captain John Smith elected its first mayor In 1865 when Prince Georges County was created it included all but southeastern Montgomery County including College Park which remained part of Prince George's County until 1959 when it became its own independent county On July 1st 1927College Park annexed portions of Hyattsville which were then annexed by Prince Georges County

The University of Maryland, College Park (UMCP) was founded in 1847 by a group of Scotsmen led by Rev. John Nicholson. The first students enrolled at UMP were Scottish Protestants who had emigrated to the United States. In 1860, UMP became one of the five founding colleges of the American System, which provided higher education for men in the United States. The American System operated until it was replaced by the University of California system in 1938. UMCP played a significant role during America's Civil War. For many years, it served as an important training ground for military officers and soldiers. In 1865, UMP became the first college in Maryland to offer courses leading to a degree from the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley. At its peak, UMP drew more than 40,000 students each year and employed over 300 faculty members. In 1971, UMP merged with three other universities – Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Stanford University (SU) and North Carolina State University (NCSU) – forming what is now known as UMCP–Johns Hopkins, Stanford, and North Carolina State Universities Campus Compact. This merger made UMCP one of only eight institutions in America that offer undergraduate degrees from multiple universities together under one roof. Since then, UMCP has seen many changes both on campus and off-campus.
