The College Park neighborhood was first settled in the early 1800s. George Washington and his family lived in what is now the University of Maryland's College Park campus from 1789 to 1793. The area became a part of Prince Edward County, Maryland, on July 1, 1871. On October 15, 1881, the United States Congress passed an act creating Montgomery County and incorporating the College Park area into it. In 1925, American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) constructed its original corporate headquarters in what is now known as AT&T Corporate Center. The building stood until 1978 when it was destroyed by fire. In 1984, Comcast Corp.'s new corporate headquarters were built in the same building and remain today one of Comcast's most prized assets. The old National Broadcasting Company (NBC) Building located at 7th and G Streets NNW is also significant for its former use as a television station transmitter site for Baltimore affiliate WBAL-TV from 1951 to 1957.
