In celebration of theicentennial of the first American gun magazine, "The Gunsmith", we are reprinting an article that was originally published in 1990. For more than a century, "The Gunsmith" served as one of the most important sources for firearm enthusiasts in Maryland and throughout the United States. Gun magazines have been around since at least 1841 when John Browning established his first manufacturing company to produce firearms by himself. The industry rapidly grew after World War II as Americans began buying more firearms, both personal and military. By 1970, there were more than 1,600 gun magazines across America. Today's firearm enthusiast owes much to the work done by "The Gunsmith". From its inception, "The Gunsmith" helped provide information and resources for those who wanted to learn about Firearms and how to own them safely. Editors at "The Gunsmith" regularly contributed articles on all things firearms including technical tips and advice on reloading techniques; writes on popular rifles and shotguns; coverage of law enforcement events; advice on muzzleloading Reloading techniques; tips for safe storage and transportation of handguns; as well as reports on new products being developed in the firearms field. College Park is a city in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,594 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Prince George's County and the seat of Anne Arundel County. The University of Maryland, College Park (UMD) is one of the most comprehensive universities in America and one of the best research institutions in Maryland. UMD also has world-renowned programs in arts, humanities, social work and medicine. Other major employers include Sodexo Pizza headquarters and MARC Rail commuter rail station. Many schools within walking distance of University Village offer undergraduate or graduate level courses as well as summer college classes for students who are not attending UMD full time. There are several restaurants and bars located near campus providing residents with plenty to do while they are here including shopping at local stores or dining out at more popular locations on nearby streets like Germantown or Greenbelt Heights.
Gun magazines are a long and continuous history, dating back to the late 1700s. The first magazine capacity pistols were typically held in three or four pockets on the waistband of pants, making them easy to carry and use. Magazine capacity pistols quickly became popular for self-defense, as they allowed for more rounds per gun to be carried, which made it easier to protect oneself from attackers. Today, pistol magazines can hold up to 10 rounds in each pocket.

In 1837, College Park was founded as a small academy by Presbyterian ministers. The school grew rapidly and in 1851, it became the first college in Maryland. In 1861, College Park was the site of an epic battle between Confederate forces and Union troops that ended with a Union victory. The college continued to grow and in 1927, it became the University of Baltimore. In 1965, the university merged with Johns Hopkins University to form what is now known as Maryland State University. Over time, many other colleges and universities have been established in College Park including Carleton University (1974), Bowie State (1995), American International School (2002), and Northern Virginia Community College (2006). The history of College Park has been full of innovation and progressivism. It has seen a number of famous alumni include former President Gerald Ford, Alice Paul Sumner McConnell, Hootie Johnson Jr., Shirley Chisholm and Strom Thurmond. Today, College Park remains one of the most forward-thinking campuses in all of America.
The area that is now College Park was first settled by the Alani people in the late 16th century. In 1777, the Potomac Company founded a small college here to provide education for Native Americans. The company's trustees desired to promote American independence and create opportunities for Native Americans, so they named the college "Mount Vernon." In 1811, College Park was renamed Washington University in honor of George Washington, who had served as its first president. In 1832, Washington University became an official school of higher learning with a chancellor and faculty. The university experienced rapid growth during the 19th century and soon attained national stature. During World War I (1914-18), Washington University served as one of the few universities in America to offer military training on campus. After World War II (1939-1945), Washington University underwent several changes, including becoming an all-throughly public institution. In 1969, it merged with St Johns College to form Georgetown University.
