On July 1, 1846 – two years after Maryland became a United States state – CollegePark became part of Prince George’s County when it was split off from Talbot County following a referendum vote by voters in that county. The first buildings for what would become the University were built on campus in 1851: A school house called Parsonage #1 on East Main Street; an Academy building called Parsonage #2 on North High Street; and a Health Hall called Medical School House on South High Street (). Due largely to increasing enrollment at UMCP charges began escalating rapidly ...... Effective Fall 1893 faculty only numbered 21 compared to early 1900’s facultative faculty numbering over 350 ....afflexing reorg did not take hold until 1907 ................. Meanwhile, other colleges began opening up throughout Maryland: Trinity Episcopal Institute (1838), Bowie Methodist Institute (1840), Eastern Maryland Normal School (1841), Carroll Female Seminary (1843), American Baptist Sunday School Union (1846), Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1848). In 1851, Frederick Law Olmsted again donated land for a university when he purchased 4200 acres near present-day Mount Pleasant Avenue and East Capitol Street from Samuel Morse Sr.. Construction began on ColumbiaUniversity's first building – what would be known as Old Main – on October 14, 1853. On April 12, 1865, during World War I when America's war effort was centered around helping Europe winthe war, President Abraham Lincoln signed into law US Army Act 1042 which authorized the Department of War to award military contracts without competitive bidding to private companies within five years….
