One account claims that General Ewell ordered his colonel “to go ahead with Cutty Sark” – a reference to Admiral Sir Gordon Ramsay’s private yacht – as part of his battle plan; however no record exists confirming or denying this claim On May 25th 1861 local militia killed five Unionists who had been quartered near by Fort Myer across Frome Creek when they encountered unknown troops under command of Ulysses S Grant while scouting along Route 66 north from Fredericktown In 1883 Main Street was renamed "John Fenton Boulevard" in honor of Baltimore mayor John Fenton who had helped provide financial support for Cambridge College until its closure following federal funding cuts In 1911 main street was again renamed "John Fenton Boulevard" in honor of Mayor Alfred Hinsdale after Baltimore's installation as capital city

Cambridge, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Baltimore–Arlington metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1757 by Colonel John Smith as a trading post on an island in the Potomac River. He named it after Cambridge, England. The first settlers arrived around 1787 and built homes on what is now Main Street. By 1800, there were over 100 people living in Cambridge. The town was renamed to honor General Thomas Gage when he moved his headquarters from Alexandria to Cambridge in 1794. In 1810, the Ulysses S Grant Parish School District was consolidated into the Cambridge-based Prince George's County Public Schools district. In 1835, Cambridge became part of Frederick Douglass' newly formed "New Negro" community of Baltimore City and Howard University graduate James Weldon Johnson's "African American Settlement". This growth led to increased public attention on the small community and its residents began receiving mail from newspapers throughout the United States including articles about their well-being and experiences with racism within society at large during this time period which has been preserved through oral history programs such as those at Howard University Archives & Special Collections Department and Rare Book & Manuscript Library (University of Maryland). In 1850s home prices started to go up due to new development west of town along Route 1A known as "The Striped Ring." By 1860s most of what is now downtown Cambridge had been developed with several important businesses located there including A&P grocery store (now JCPenney), Post Office (now USPS), Masonic Lodge No. 6 (now Oriole Park Partners), First National Bank Building (later Sears Roebuck & Co.), Stonehenge Brewery (later Anheuser Busch Brewery) and many more restaurants and bars that dotted busy streets near State Routes 1&1A throughout most of America during this period with some notable exceptions such as Gotham City in New York City where high class live while working side by side with low income neighborhoods filled with unionized African Americans who labored long hours for little pay doing everything from picking cotton to serving drinks
The town of Cambridge, Maryland was founded in 1776 by the merger of two smaller settlements, Northampton and West Cambridge. The town's first settler, Captain John Smith, arrived in 1776 and purchased land from the Potomac River. He began to build a cabin on what is now Huntingdon Road. In 1777, he married his wife Anne Bradstreet and the couple set out for their new home. They arrived at what is now known as Northampton Avenue and built their house on what is now Elm Street. The Smiths were among the earliest settlers inCambridge and they became prominent citizens there. In 1803, Captain John Smith Jr. died without leaving any children behind him so his widow took over his estate and continued to grow the community. She donated land to College Park in 1836 which later became University Park downtown. In 1884, King George V granted Cambridge city rights which gave it autonomy from Caroline County and made it a separate municipality within the United States of America
