Cambridge, Maryland is a city in and the county seat of Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 2,803 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Potomac River between Frederick and Washington counties. The first European settlers in what would become Cambridge were French traders who arrived there in 1634. They named their settlement "Port Royal" after France's King Charles I's ship "Richelieu", which had stopped there during its voyage from France to England with supplies for the English army fighting against Spanish forces in North America. The town grew rapidly due to periodic military campaigns against Native Americans and settlement by white men looking for land to farm or build plantations. In 1747, Captain John Smith discovered part of this area that would later become Cambridge when he sailed up the Potomac River as part of a British attempt to open sea lanes through American airspace without paying American colonists dues. In 1821, Congress passed an act authorizing Prince George's County to be formed from parts of Caroline and Montgomery counties. On February 1, 1825, Cambridge became a city under charter from Baltimore Mayor James Ketchum Sr., one of six cities founded by Maryland governor Francis Scott Key II following his victory in a referendum over anti-slavery campaigner William Lloyd Garrison in 1824. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell invested money in real estate development around present-day Harvard Square; this led to his nickname "thefounderofHarvard". After the end of World War II and until the late 1960s much of downtown Cambridge was built up around Harvard Square as housing developments increased traffic congestion on two major arteries: US 301 (now Route 66) and Queen Street NW (now Wisconsin Avenue). One block east of Massachusetts Avenue near Yale Law School was developed into what is now known as Central Park South; it was once home to many fashionable restaurants including Delmonico’s diaries restaurant which closed its doors in 2007 after more than 50 years in business.[1] In recent decades most activity has shifted upstream towards Arlington Cemetery where many wealthy residents have buried themselves since limits were placed on burial within five miles (8 km) of high schools[2]. The growth rates for these suburban neighborhoods have outpaced those for central Cambridge; however redevelopment plans are moving forward slowly due largely to concerns about car ownership within low-income areas closer to Interstate 95 Exit 9 which straddles both townships boundary lines.[3] A new elementary school opened adjacent to Commonwealth Stadium on July 25th 2016 replacing oldest local public school building which had been condemned by an independent panel as unsafe 3 years earlier
