Cambridge, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 15,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area. The town was founded by John Smith in 1751 as Smithstown and incorporated as Cambridge on February 14, 1868. It became an independent city on October 1, 2004. The town began as a small farming community located along the Potomac River about upstream from modern-day Cambridge. On December 6, 1751, John Smith purchased 100 acres (40 hectares) of land from the local Rev. James Cook for £5 sterling cash. The first permanent settler in what would become Cambridge was Amos Davenport who arrived January 8th, 1753 with his family and 10 others to farm around present day Trinity Chapel and Hogback Hills Road. The original name for the community was "Smithstown", but because it lacked a church it changed to "Cambridge" on February 14th of that year after being recommended by then Mayor Thomas Gage Sr.. The first mayor of Cambridge was James Cook who served one term from September 7th through November 3rd of that year before he resigned due to illness at age 51 years old; his successor was Joseph Priestley who served until March 4th 1814 when he also resigned due to illness; succeeded by Samuel Chase which lasted until May 12th 1814 when Samuel Chase also resigned due to ill health; succeeded by Benjamin Carden which lasted until November 3rd 1817 when Carden died suddenly while serving as Acting Mayor during England's American Revolution against British rule In 1868 the first post office opened in Cambridge with Wm Higginson serving as Postmaster General and Dr David Hunter acting Deputy Postmaster General On October 1st 1904, Cambridge became an independent city under charter granted by Governor Albertus Ewing Jr.. That same year saw another major milestone for the community when Boston Hotspur soccer team joined forces with local track club New Market Highlanders FC to form what would be known as "The Big Three" team coalition which would dominate Eastern Shore soccer competition over ensuing decades On July 20th 1951 KG Morrone set up shop in downtown Cambridge selling ice cream cones out their front window . One can still purchase these treats today at Morrone's store inside City Hall
