Cambridge, Maryland is a small town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. It is located on the eastern bank of the Potomac River. The population was 2,823 at the 2000 census. The town was founded in 1740 by Captain John Smith and his crew of four men as Fort Caroline on an island in the river. When land was donated by Prince George's County to be used for a new county seat, Cambridge became its site. The first structure built in Cambridge was a log cabin that served as courthouse and jail from 1749 until 1801. In 1834, Congress passed an act giving Prince George's County status as a state and creating the office of governor. As part of this change, the county seat moved from Cambridge to Frederick City after Frederick City officials failed to build a new courthouse within their own boundaries. In 1916, King World War I veteran Colonel Edward Everett Hale donated land on which Harvard University would grow; it would be named for him later that year. The city saw heavy construction during World War II due to wartime demand for housing and businesses; much of this work remains today in Box Hill Terrace north of downtown Cambridge. After being destroyed by fire in 1951, most of what remained of Cambridge were rebuilt using Federal Housing Administration funds with assistance from local foundations over the next few years. In 1971, when Prince George's County changed its name back to Montgomery County following its merger into Washington State, parts of Cambridge were included within Montgomery County but remain separated economically from their larger neighbor to the south (Box Hill Terrace). Today many people who grew up in or around Cambridge remember it primarily as a bedroom community during those years due largely to Interstate 95 encroachment upon farming areas east of downtown Camden that had been closed off by development prohibitions dating back before Prohibition made driving alcohol illegal across state lines illegal (thoughdriving without an open container still violated these laws). Cambridge, Maryland was founded by the Reverend John Carroll in 1781. The town was named after the Reverend and Mrs. Carroll, who donated land to the town. The first settler in Cambridge was Capt. George Washington, who built a house there in 1784. In 1814, the town became part of Frederick County and remained that way until 1959 when it became a part of Prince George's County.
