Cambridge, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 24,646 at the 2010 census. Cambridge is home to the University of Cambridge and other colleges and universities. The center of town is known for its Georgian-style architecture, which has been featured in books and movies such as "The Great Gatsby" and "Charlotte's Web". The first inhabitants of what would become Cambridge were Native Americans. These people may have hunted game or gathered plants and flowers near present-day Eastern Lane. In 1684, Captain John Smith discovered land that would become Cambridge when he passed through the area on his way from proprietorship of North America to England. He named the area after himself, and laid out streets in what are now Beacon Hill and Clarence Street. By 1720, most of what would become Cambridge had been developed as part of Frederick Towne on the Potomac River estuary where fishing villages had begun developing around1695 by James Kieft Sr., one of Cecil Calvert's trustees. In 1746–47 saw severe flooding caused by heavy rains in Prince George's County that affected much of Northern Virginia including parts of today's Maryland; during this time many homes were destroyed or reduced to ruins due to standing water levels up to high enough for boats to navigate safely downstream. A group led by Colonel John Jenkins built a dam across the Potomac River just upstream from present day Harvard Road/Easton Avenue in order to control these rising waters – also known as Canoe Landing (later renamed Princeton). When it was completed they referred to it as Lake Caroline because it resembled Caroline Island off the coast of Virginia Beach; however no body ever landed there! This event helped form Georgetown thanks in part to Judge William Braddock who organized some settlers there who purchased rights from Captain John Smith upon landing on 8 October 1749 while surveyors were mapping Washington County properties northward along Interstate 95 (the modern National Highway System). Governor Robert Eustace offered 3 acres (1 km2) on West Falls Road south side of Centerstream Drive east side for president’s house but President James Kieft refused because he did not want any buildings within five miles radius having an annual rent above $200 sterling per year! This bridge still stands today - only traffic going cross over now uses ramps leading upriver instead
