In 1307, Gunnery Sergeant John Smith created the first firearm that could be fired from a kneeling position: the musket or rifle. By 1455, handgun technology had advanced enough for cannons to be created. Shotguns became available in 1570 and pistols began to be produced in 1660. Rifle technology progressed even further until it was able to fire projectiles that weighed more than lead shot in 1700 AD when Johannes Gutenberg developed his printing press which allowed for mass production of rifles, pistols and cannonballs
