Cambridge, Maryland is a town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. The first settlers in Cambridge were English Protestants who arrived in 1764. They founded a small village on the north side of present-day Capitol Hill and named it after their home town of Cambridge, England. In 1814, they moved to what is now the east side of Capitol Hill and renamed it after themselves. The village was destroyed by fire in 1828 but continued to exist as a ghost town until 1840 when residents bought land on which they built new homes. In 1846, they changed their name to Cambridge again and annexed part of Prince George's County. Today, Cambridge is an important center for government and academic life with several colleges and universities including Goucher College (a private liberal arts school), Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, Howard University School of Law, and Queen's College (a public research university). It also retains some historic properties such as the old courthouse on Constitution Avenue that has been used for various purposes since its construction in 1792.
