Bowie, Maryland is a city located in western Maryland and the seat of Howard County. It is bordered by Washington County to the north, Montgomery County to the east, and Carroll County to the south. The population was estimated at over 100,000 as of 2010. Bowie has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and is known for its defensive architecture including brick walls, earthworks fortifications and rifle ranges. The first recorded mention of Bowie was in 875 AD when it was called "Buceda". The name came from an earlier Native American word meaning "the place where trees grow." In 1524 King James I of England granted land to John Witherspoon for his defense against French forces during the North American War of Independence. This area now includes much of Bowie Township and portions of Prince George's County. In 1814 Captain Samuel Colt started manufacturing arms in what is now Coltsburg on land he had bought from General John Pope. In 1839 Colt developed a new type of revolver which became known as the Colt Peacemaker. This revolver was used by Ulysses S Grant during the Civil War and later by law enforcement officers throughout America. In 1868 Bowie Rifle Range opened its doors with a 12-shot barrel rifle range that could accommodate up to 300 shooters at one time. Today it remains one of the most popular rifle ranges in Maryland with its challenging courses that can accommodate all types of shooters including those who are experienced or just beginning their shooting journey. The current mayor ( Larry Hogan) served as Mayor from 2001-2013 when he lost renomination to Barbara Lummis after being elected on a platform that included expanding gun control measures within MD state legislature/administration

Bowie, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George County, Maryland. The population was 5,851 at the 2010 census. Bowie is known for its rich history and culture which has been passed down through its residents and businesses alike. The first people to live in what is now Bowie were the Algonquians. They arrived from northeast Canada around 9000 BC. They built their village on an island in the Potomac River, about a mile from where modern Bowie sits today. The Algonquian culture was a complex one with many different groups living together for centuries before they were supplanted by other groups such as the Pocahontas Indians and the Lenape Indians. The area that would become Bowie was first settled by English colonists in 1652 as part of Queen Anne's War against France. After winning this war, England granted Lord Baltimore (later James II) land east of present-day Bowie on Mount Vernon Creek. This land included parts of what are now Prince George and Anne Arundel Counties. The colony grew rapidly and within 10 years had reached its peak with over 2,000 residents living on 80 acres of land. In 1795, however, following the Seven Years' War (1756-1763), British forces abandoned Baltimore and moved south towards Virginia under General John Forbes during what is called The Frontier Famine of 1795-1800%. Many Baltimoreites fled to new settlements throughout Princess Anne's Co., including Bowie which saw a population growth rate of 50% between 1800 and 1810 due to immigration from all over Europe plus refugees from Georgiayland who had fled slavery there! As development slowed in Prince George County during the 19th century due to technology advances such as transportation methods invented by Samuel Morse*, bowyers emerged as key players in this period; major businesses include First National Bank (founded 1814), J & W Hatcher’s grocery store (1824), Peebles Coal & Coke Company (1835), Anheuser Busch Brewery (1889) and White Bros Ice Cream Factory(1911). Bowie experienced another boom period during World War II when demand for rubber materials skyrocketed Due to wartime production shortages caused by both America's involvement in WWII AND Germany's invasion of Europe; industries like shipbuilding**and biomedical research flourished! Post-war decline brought few notable changes until 1978 when Mayor Harry Bowers announced plans for redevelopment that spanned 4 blocks extending back onto Main Street* resulting in current day buildings on 3 sides totaling 130 feet long! After more than 50 years experiencing steady growth rates averaging more than 10%, some local leaders decided it was time for downtown Bowie to undergo an update which included renovation/modification of streetscape elements * including installation of green lighting system
