In 1909, Bowie was first settled in what is now Maryland. At the time, Bowie was a small town of less than 1,000 people. The postwar period saw many changes for Bowie as well - with population growth (especially during the late 1960s), new development sprang up throughout town including two shopping malls (one opened in 1969), andsignificant industry redevelopment led to increased employment opportunities within town limits as well as outlying villages affected by retail growth. As a result of its location within close proximity to both Washington D.C., and Baltimore City (the largest city in Maryland), Bowie quickly became an important commercial center for the surrounding area. The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century; it reached its peak size with over 10,000 residents in 1860. However, during the early 20th century economic difficulties caused by technological advances and increased competition led to decreased population levels and heavy Democrat representation in local government throughout most of Prince George's County due to this fact - until well into the 21st century Bowie remained largely rural with a very low percentage of non-Hispanic white residents compared to other parts of Maryland or Northern Virginia. In recent years there has been significant development occurring within the boundaries of Bowie including new shopping malls nearby such as JCPenney and Sears – which have helped increase retail traffic within town – as well as developments such as an energy park that is currently being developed adjacent to Interstate 95/ Route 1 which will bring much needed jobs and investment directly into town – offering hope for further population growth should these positive developments continue apace. Bowie is named after David Bowie, who was born in the town on December 14th, 1947. In 1951, Bowie's family moved to Bowie Township and renamed it after their home town of Shavertown, Pennsylvania which they had left when he was two years old. The Bowman family remained in the township until his father died in 1984. When David graduated from high school in 1966 he decided to move away from his birthplace and start anew with his new family. For several years he worked as an electrician for Local 438-A of the National Electric Workers Union (NEWU). He then studied at Wayne State University before transferring to Rutgers University where he earned a master’s degree in Fine Arts Administration in 1970. Upon completion of his studies he began working as an art teacher at Northern High School near Baltimore but soon found himself drawn back to Bowie Township where he lived until his death on January 15th, 2016 aged 69 years old. David Bowie had a profound impact both locally and nationally during his lifetime. After moving to Los Angeles for music recording sessions following the success of "Space Oddity" ( 1969), Bowie quickly became known as one of rock music’s most innovative and iconic performers – even if some felt that “the young David” wasn't quite ready for prime time yet. His second album under contract with Columbia Records – "Heroes" (1975) – broke all sales records upon its release; while critical acclaim followed suit including nominations for five Grammy Awards ® (*). Even beyond popular music circles albums like " Lodger" (1981) and "Young Americans" (1983) garnered critical respect - each showcasing an artist developing cutting-edge musical ideas while still maintaining lyrical accessibility* [*]. As Ziggy Stardust™ (*) later observed: “He could do any number of things that other people couldn't do because they were already too famous or too successful." Lesser-known projects such as "Let's Dance!" (1982), "Aladdin pt 2" (1987), and "The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars" () were also well received by fans but failed to chart on Billboard 200 * *.
