The first settler in what is now Bowie was John Smith who arrived in 1774. In 1814, David Lloyd built a sawmill on White Marsh Creek which became known as Lloyd's Sawmill because it produced high-quality lumber for export. The community that developed around this mill was named after General John Archer Allan (1775-1846) who served as Commander of British forces during the War of 1812 and contributed significantly to Bowies development as a rural community with close ties to its military garrison. Allan also donated land for school and church buildings in 1865 which helped spur growth within the community. In 1870, an act was passed through Congress entitled "An Act To promote Agriculture and Commerce" which created Prince George's County and assigned it its present borders including Bowie Township on the north side of I-495, Northumberland Township on the east side of I-495, Allegany Township on the south side of I-495 and Carroll County on the west side of I-495. This act made Bowie one of three townships within Prince George's County - along with Glassboro and Harford - that were not given county government until 1914 when all but Carroll County were added to form Montgomery County. As part of Prince George's County's efforts towards modernization following World War II, $5 million was allocated for town planning purposes which resulted in redevelopment projects such as construction of Bowman High School (1946), expanded shopping facilities near I-95 (1957), expansion into new housing developments throughouttown (1965), creation of Central Park(1968) and renovation/updates to many local churches (1974). Today, Bowie remains an unassuming hamlet with rolling hills surrounding its small square central business district complete with a Baptist churchitself built in 1834; two Masonic lodges; a post office; several convenience stores; two restaurants; three pharmacies; two hair salons; four bowling alleysone open 24/7and two pools - among other amenities typical todayof a small town located just outside Baltimore City limits amidst imposing urban surroundings
