Archaeological evidence suggests that arrows were shot from longbows in this area as early as 3200 BC. The first bows to be used in war were made out ofruce tree saw blades and bamboo shafts. In 1577, Francis Drake shot an arrow at a Spanish ship off the coast of present day Bowie and was credited with helping start what would become one of America’s most significant military campaigns. At that time, it had a population of around 100 people and was home to a number of businesses including a flour mill, Baptist church, and a jail. However, by 1880, Bowie's economy had started to decline as silver prices plummeted and its population decreased by over 50%. In 1881, Bowie voters passed an ordinance banning handguns and increasing taxes on whiskey to help support the town's struggling economy. The ordinance also allowed for the sale of shotguns only to law enforcement officers. However, whilebanning handguns did not work as planned in Bowie (it wasn't until 1923 that Maryland finally repealed this prohibition), it did succeed in causing gun crime rates in the town to decrease. This is likely due to citizens being more likely to rely on their firearms for self-defense rather than using them forriminal purposes.

Bowie, Maryland is a small town located in Prince George's County, Maryland. The population was 3,651 at the 2010 census. Bowie is one of the oldest towns in Prince George's County and has been established since 1791. The name "Bowie" comes from a Shawnee word meaning "place where black bears live." The first settler in what is now Bowie was James Bowie who arrived in 1791. He built a cabin on the banks of the Potomac River and named it Bowmanstown after himself and his wife Judith. In 1824, John Bowie moved to Bowie and started a grocery store that still exists today. By 1830, Bowman had four stores and 30 residents. In 1857, he founded the Bowie Agricultural Society which donated land for a farm on Greenbelt Road that became known as Bowie Farms. The society also built two homes for members: One on Greenbelt Road and one near present-day Interstate 95 south of Washington D.C.. In 1871, Atherton Wintz took over ownership of the Bowie grocery store from John Bowman and continued to run it until his death in 1904. Wintz' son Albert ran the store until 1947 when it was sold to Harry Sargent who operated it until 1984 when it passed through several hands before being bought by David Weisman who operates it today as part of Steak 'n Shake restaurant chain
Bowie was founded in 1779 by John Bowie, a Revolutionary War veteran and entrepreneur. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, thanks to its mineral resources and loggers who built homes and businesses near the river. In 1872, Bowie became the county seat of Harford County.
