Bowie, Maryland is a town in Prince George's County, Maryland, United States. The population was 10,362 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Prince George's County. Bowie is located on U.S. Route 1 north of Washington D.C., about halfway between Silver Spring and Manassas Junction. The first people to live in what is now Bowie were the Potomac Indian tribe who lived along the Potomac River until 1814 when they moved to present-day Arlington County and its vicinity. In 1795, Bowie was founded by Captains John Bowyer and James Cook as a small trading village on the Susquehanna River west of Fredericktown (later Frederick). In 1800, it became a town under charter from King George II of Great Britain after Captain Bowyer donated land for a public square and courthouse. The first post office was established in Bowie on November 16, 1800 by Stephen Bowen with the name "Mosesburg." The name reverted to "Bowie" on January 8th of 1802 when Captain Cook donated land east of present-day Bowie for an American burying ground which he called Mount Hope Cemetery; this donation remains today as part of National Cathedral Park's grounds adjacent to Interstate 495 southbound exit ramp off I-495 near Prince Georges Mall. A second post office was established at Bowie by Jno Cockerill with the name "Fayetteville" on October 25th, 1803 because Anthony Wayne had bought 330 acres (1 km²) east of town for £2 per acre (0·76 ha). When General James Armistead took over command of all southern Virginia forces during his march through Prince Georges County in December 1861 following Robert Ewell's Confederate defeat at Fredericksburg Army Peninsula Campaign, he ordered all military installations within eastern Virginia closed so that no supplies or troops could be transported into rebel hands without surrendering their cannons and other equipment - including ammunition dumps -thus ending Baltimore's involvement in hostilities outside Maryland proper although trade with Baltimore continued unabated throughout 1861–1865 due primarily to its location within easy reach of Confederate ports across Delaware Bay/Maryland Sound/Virginia Beach/Portsmouth
